Abstract

Monocrystals of calcite, and of the other alkaline earth carbonates, are of theoretical and practical interest. It would be of interest to see how the form of the crystal is related to the medium from which the crystal grew, since certain simple carbonates, especialy calcite, show very many and varied forms. It is also necessary to establish the degree of isomorphism of the calcite-group minerals, and the positions of minerals such as monheimite, cobaltsmithsonite, oligonite, and so on. Calcite is of great value in optical instruments. It is therefore only to be expected that calcite and related carbonates should be studied closely.
