Abstract
It is the generally held view of all experienced fish culturists that the common carp, Cyprinus carpio L. is the most adaptable of the farmed fishes. It can be reared in still and running waters, ponds, lakes and cages, from the cold temperate zone to the tropics, its only constraint being an inability to deal with saline waters. Its omnivorous feeding habit allows it to utilise feed of plant and animal origin, and its retropharyngeal oesophageal ‘teeth’ allow ready mechanical rupture of even the most fibrous of feed. It also feeds extensively on the products of natural production in the waters and is an extremely efficient food convertor.
