The Breakdown of Polysomes and the Stimulation of Protein Synthesis as Cerebral Mechanisms of Defense against Seizures

  • Chapter
Protein Metabolism of the Nervous System

Abstract

The recent advances in our understanding of the relationships among nucleic acids and the ribosome on the one hand and protein synthesis, its control and modulation on the other(1–5) have revealed that in neural tissue the mutual interactions of these and other macromolecular systems with one another and with the environment must be very complex if, by virtue of their integration, a correct specification of cellular function and cellular behavior is to be achieved.(6–8) That is why the intricate network of capabilities that this tissue must have available for the specification and the programming of the myriad of its complex supramolecular functions has been barely formulated, and, when so, only speculatively. (9–11) Hence, the question: “Do the cellular and the organismic responses of neural tissue originate in molecular events, and, if so, how are these transduced into specific modes of expression, termed behavior?” must elicit, at present, a guarded “We don’t know, but give us more time to find out” for an answer.
