Abstract

The Coelenterates constitute a lower metazoa group phylogenetically situated close to the Sponges; they include two phyla, the Cnidaria and Ctenophora. The former contains numerous genera and most of the results which are known concerning coelenterate collagens have been obtained from studies of only a few species in each of the three classes: Hydrozoa (Piez and Gross, 1959; Mackie and Mackie, 1967; Davis and Haynes, 1968; Haynes et al., 1968; Chapman, 1973; Barzansky et al., 1975), Scyphozoa (Burnett and Sutton, 1969; Chapman, 1970; Bynum and Black, 1974; Kimura et al., 1983), and Anthozoa (Grimstone et al., 1958; Piez and Gross, 1959; Batham, 1960; Leghissa and Quaglia, 1965; Pikkarainen et al., 1968; Nordwig and Hayduk, 1969; Katzman and Oronsky, 1971; Arai and Karakashian, 1973; Nordwig et al., 1973; Young, 1973; Quaglia, 1974; Singer, 1974; Franc et al., 1976; Franc et al., 1984). The second phylum, the Ctenophora, contains fewer species, and few works are available on their collagens (Bargmann, 1972; Franc et al., 1976; Franc, 1984).
