Abstract
Certain dolphin whistles display a hyperbolic increase in frequency as a function of time, followed by a hyperbolic decrease. These whistles nearly always contain one or more harmonics. The signals were classified as distress calls by Lilly (1963), but they are also used under many other circumstances.
