Part of the book series: Advances in Experimental Medicine and Biology ((AEMB,volume 248))

Abstract

The intregrity of cardiac function depends on the energy of the tissue where ATP is produced mainly by oxidative phosphorylation in the mitochondria. Thus, a critical oxygen concentration has been postulated below which function cannot be maintained. Araki et al. (1983) found oxygen consumption fell when cardiac tissue oxygen concentration fell below 10 wmM. However, energy state can be governed by factors other than oxygen concentration (Owen and Wilson, 1974). In the present study, we performed simultaneously measuring the energy state of isolated hearts, by 31P-NMR, and estimating the tissue oxygen concentration by optical spectroscopy. Similar in situ measurements in brain were reported previously (Tamura et al., 1988).
