Part of the book series: Advances in Experimental Medicine and Biology ((AEMB,volume 211))

Abstract

It has been known for over 15 years that glucose and most other stimuli for insulin secretion induce electrical activity in the pancreatic β-cell4. The secretory and electrical responses are furthermore known to be closely correlated13. From membrane potential recordings obtained with conventional intracellular electrodes and from flux measurements at least three types of currents have been postulated10.
