Abstract
The channels we consider in this chapter have not yet been observed. They are part of a model we have developed to describe the increase in cytosolic calcium that occurs within an egg following fertilization. Before describing the model, it is useful to provide some background. First, we outline the processes that occur following fertilization of a sea urchin egg, in order to put into context the role of the increase in cytosolic calcium. Then we summarize the experimental evidence that guided the development of the model. Finally, we describe the model in words and in equations and indicate some of its predictions.
