Abstract
My approach to family therapy emerged gradually after my beginnings in 1951 (Bell, 1961). To this day it continues to shift, though now in less dramatic ways. Starting without precedents I had the opportunity, without any input from other therapists, to devise a method that worked for me. Accordingly, the methods will not necessarily be functional for others whose personalities, family backgrounds, developmental experiences, and exposures to varieties of family therapy direct them to make their own different approaches to families.
