Abstract
Bacillus subtilis possesses the most thoroughly studied genetic system among gram-positive bacteria. Genetic analysis of this organism by means of transduction and transformation has lead to the development of a circular genetic map, the identification and approximate localization of the replication origin and terminus for the chromosome, as well as to studies of extrachromosomal inheritance (1,2). In recent years gene cloning in B. subtilis has been accomplished by several laboratories.
