Abstract
The membrane of human red blood cells is structurally asymmetric in that most, if not all, of its constituent molecules are oriented in such a manner that different groups are exposed at each membrane surface. Carbohydrates are restricted to the external surface and peripheral proteins to the cytoplasmic surface. Integral proteins which span the membrane are always asymmetrically arranged. Of the major phospholipids, the ones at the outer surface are mainly the choline phosphatides, while the inwardly facing ones are amino lipids.1,2,3
