A Microscopic Approach for the Simulation of Radioactive Waste Storage in Glass

  • Chapter
Scientific Basis for Nuclear Waste Management

Part of the book series: Advances in Nuclear Science & Technology ((ANST))

Abstract

Leaching of samples externally irradiated with low energy (~ lkeV/nucleon) heavy ions shows that the accumulation of a-recoils in glass can drastically reduce the life-time of waste storage glasses in geological environments against complete dissolution by ground water solutions.
