Abstract

Coronary collaterals are vessels of arteriolar size and structure (Schaper, 1971) which link areas supplied by separate coronary arteries or which link the territories of subbranches of the same artery. These vessels have been found in the normal hearts of man (James, 1961, Spalteholz, 1924, Fulton, 1963, 1965, Paulin, 1967) dogs (Blair, 1961, Moore, 1929, Pianetto, 1939) and pigs (Vastesaeger, 1957, Robbins, 1964).Collaterals can be made visible by a multitude of different techniques (Schaper, 1967) which grossly differ in sensitivity.
