The Geology of the Egyptian Region

  • Chapter
The Ocean Basins and Margins

Abstract

Egypt covers a roughly square area of almost 1,000,000 km2 at the crossroads of Africa and Asia. It is bounded to the north by the Mediterranean Sea and to the east by the Red Sea. It may be divided into seven main geographic parts: (1) the valley and delta of the Nile, (2) El Fayum, (3) the Suez Canal, (4) the Western Desert, (5) the Eastern Desert, (6) the peninsula of Sinai, and (7) the islands in the Red Sea (Ball, 1939). To these may be added the marine territorial waters in the Mediterranean Sea, Red Sea, Gulf of Suez, and Gulf of Aqaba.
