The Use of Ion Beams in Corrosion Science

  • Chapter
Applications of Ion Beams to Metals

Abstract

Two major preoccupations of corrosion science are to find ways of improving the corrosion resistance of metals by alloying and, secondly, to achieve a better understanding of the often complex mechanisms of corrosion. I wish to demonstrate how ion implantation may be used to carry out both these tasks, particularly when employed in conjunction with ion beam and other, more conventional, techniques of surface analysis and inspection.
