The Gross Classification of Algae

  • Chapter
Algae and Man

Abstract

While algal taxonomy as a whole has been subject to much change in later years, the system of Pascher (1914) is still rather closely followed by most authors as far as the classes go. The way of subdividing them, as well as that of grouping them together, may vary. But the very concept of an algal class is unchanged, demanding considerable uniformity with regard to chemical and cyto-logical features and to the type of monadoid cells, while allowing for unlimited variation in thallus construction, and disregarding whether the prevailing vegetative condition is that of motile or of nonmotile cells.
