Ecology of Streams at High Latitudes

  • Chapter
Perspectives in Running Water Ecology

Abstract

Much of our current knowledge of the structure and the function of lotic ecosystems has arisen from studies conducted in the north of Europe and in temperate North America; this has given rise to a conception of what must be a typical running water habitat, its biota and their interrelationships. Investigations at more polar or equatorial latitudes have been much fewer, and by necessity, have often been comparisons with temperate systems, rather than studies in their own right. The situation is usually due to logistic problems which plague such endeavours. Not too surprisingly, limnological history is repeating itself at these latitudes and a much greater interest is being shown for the study of standing waters, lakes, ponds, and pools, than for running waters.
