Copper- and Zinc-Binding Components in Rat Intestine

  • Chapter
Protein-Metal Interactions

Part of the book series: Advances in Experimental Medicine and Biology ((AEMB,volume 48))

Abstract

Protein-metal interactions encompass a wide variety of metabolic processes. Several of the papers presented in this symposium demonstrate that metals react with enzymes or proteins and thereby promote catalytic activity and/or maintain functional conformation. Protein-metal interactions are also involved in metal storage, i. e. ferritin, and metal transport in the blood, i. e. transferrin. In addition, there is an increasing awareness that proteins and peptides are involved in metal transport across biological membranes (1–3).
