The Azolla ā€” Anabaena Azzolae Symbiosis

  • Chapter
Genetic Engineering for Nitrogen Fixation

Part of the book series: Basic Life Sciences ((BLSC,volume 9))

Abstract

Free-living, nitrogen fixing blue-green algae occur in soils and in both fresh water and marine habitats from the tropics to the antarctic.lā€“3 Moreover, symbiotic relationships with nitrogen-fixing blue-green algae encompass members of a relatively large and diverse segment of the plant kingdom. In particular, blue-green algae in the Nostoc-Anabaena group exist in symbiotic associations as lichens and with liverworts, water-ferns, cycads and the angiosperm, Gunnera.3,4
