Abstract
Minot (1891) pointed out that from conception to maturity guinea pigs grew at an average rate of 1.82 g/day, rabbits at one of 6.3 g/day, and man at one of 6.69 g/ day. Men therefore grew larger than rabbits because they grew longer but rabbits grew larger than guinea pigs because they grew faster. This was the first time there had been numerical demonstration of the two ways by which one could attain a large size, and Minot concluded that it would be well worthwhile to make a study of this. We agree, and this chapter is an attempt to show what has been done.
