Selected Nonexperimental Methods: An Orientation

  • Chapter
Principles and Practice of Research

Abstract

Clinical investigators and members of interdisciplinary research teams may often find that they must employ nonexperimental strategies characteristically used by epidemiologists and biostatisticians, particularly when randomized controlled trials (RCTs) are not ethically or practically feasible. These designs are used less frequently than controlled trials in surgical and anesthesia research. This chapter is intended as an orientation for those who seek meaningful and knowledgeable partnership in clinical and epidemiologic research. The bibliography will assist those who wish to pursue an in-depth understanding of the strategies presented here.
