Abstract
In one survey, 66% of women physicians indicated that they had had at least one very difficult period in their lives and felt that they were frequently “skating on thin ice.”1 This is indicative of a relatively high level of stress. The three major sources of unique stress for women physicians are prejudice, described in the chapter on “Women Physicians as a Minority,” lack of role models and role strain. All are interrelated. Since women physicians are a minority, they lack sufficient role models, which makes it more difficult for them to deal appropriately with role strain.
