Abstract
Over recent years, research on disease suppressive soils has been widely developed. Various models have been examined dealing with the major soil-borne diseases: damping-off, root rot, vascular wilts. Great progress has been made in our knowledge of the antagonistic populations and the microbial interactions which are basically responsible for these phenomena of soil suppressiveness. It is still difficult to make general statements about the microbiological mechanisms involved in soil suppressiveness, but many studies underline the role of competition for nutrients between soil microorganisms. Scher and Baker (1982) showed that fluorescent Pseudomonas competing for iron are responsible for the wilt-suppressiveness of the soils from the Salinas Valley. On the other hand we demonstrated that competition for carbon is involved in the mechanisms of suppression of the soils from the Chateaurenard region (Alabouvette et al., 1985a). However, it is difficult to demonstrate experimentally that two microorganisms are in competition and to determine the substrate for which they compete in soil.
