Bacterial Siderophores: Structure of Pyoverdins and Related Compounds

  • Chapter
Iron, Siderophores, and Plant Diseases

Part of the book series: NATO ASI Series ((NSSA,volume 117))

Abstract

The fluorescent pseudomonads are bacteria which belong to the same intrageneric homology group, namely homology group No.1 (Palleroni et al., 1973). They are characterized by the biosynthesis, in iron-deficient conditions, of yellow-green, water-soluble fluorescent compounds, the pyoverdins, which are siderophores. Each strain of pseudomonad synthesizes mainly one pyoverdin, but closely related compounds can also be isolated from the culture media.
