Abstract
Following the discovery of genetically determined electrophoretic variation at the alcohol dehydrogenase locus (Adh) in Drosophila melanogaster (Johnson and Dennison, 1964; Grell et al., 1965) evidence accumulated that the locus is polymorphic in many natural populations (O’Brien and MacIntyre, 1969; Berger, 1971; Vigue and Johnson, 1973; Band, 1975). The Adh locus in D. melanogaster, and the enzyme variants it encodes (Rasmuson et al., 1966; Gibson, 1970; Day et al., 1974), have been the subject of much research directed to understanding the mechanism of the maintenance of the polymorphism. Indeed the study of the Adh polymorphism has been chosen to illustrate the ways in which problems of enzyme polymorphisms in populations should be tackled if unambigous interpretations are to result from the experimental observations (Clarke, 1975).
