The Prostaglandins

Abstract

The name prostaglandin (PG) was originally attributed to a lipid factor in human seminal plasma having smooth muscle stimulant and vasode-pressor properties (Euler, 1935, 1936). More recent research, using pure PGs, has in many respects confirmed these observations. In addition, it has become increasingly evident that PGs constitute a family of biologically highly active compounds which are present in most tissues and which upon administration to isolated organs, or to the whole body, demonstrate a remarkably wide spectrum of pharmacological actions.
