Abstract
What we know about families is largely determined by how we know what we know. An earlier era without cumulative knowledge, scientific tools, or cross-cultural information believed the world to be flat and families in other cultures to be like families in their own. Since then, our picture of the universe has changed much more than our understanding of families. Astronomy has achieved qualitative jumps in its methods, whereas family research has depended primarily on improved forms of the same verbal data used for conclusions so long ago. Supporters of current research on families could argue that the differences in methodological progress are due to the differing topics of study. Critics might see the slow progress as evidence of a general methodological shortcoming in family studies. In either case, it is important to take a fresh look at family research methodology occasionally in order to critique and improve it.
