Coma and Related Global Disturbances of the Human Conscious State

Normal and Altered States of Function

Part of the book series: Cerebral Cortex ((CECO,volume 9))

Abstract

Consciousness, being inwardly sensed and not accessible for objective study, has eluded a common interpretation among philosophers, biologists, and physicians. Each group tends to define the condition somewhat differently according to its own biases and interests. Some even have regarded consciousness as indefinable and its physical substrate beyond scientific analysis.
