Mechanisms of Bacterial Adhesion at Gas-Liquid Interfaces

  • Chapter
Bacterial Adhesion

Abstract

The air-water interface is a simple and useful model system for work on bacterial adhesion, and the similarities between gas-liquid and solid-liquid interfaces have been recognized. With respect to its chemical constituents as a result of adsorption at the air-water interface, the surface microlayer, as “seen” by bacteria, may often be indistinguishable from that of a solid substratum (Baier, 1975).
