Green Chemistry

Using Enzymes as Benign Substitutes for Synthetic Chemicals and Harsh Conditions in Industrial Processes

  • Chapter
Biotechnology in the Sustainable Environment

Part of the book series: Environmental Science Research ((ESRH,volume 54))

Abstract

Chemophobia is on the rise in the general public, and federal and state regulators continue to put pressure and controls on the industrial use of chemicals. From a more positive angle, industry itself has shown an interest in “sustainable industrial development.” Sustainable industrial development refers to the concept that our future economic health depends on industry cutting pollution and using fewer natural resources. As a result, public, regulatory and private industrial forces are all fueling a conversion to greener alternatives by chemical producers and industrial manufacturers (Illman, 1994).
