Photoluminescence

  • Chapter
Luminescence of Solids

Abstract

Luminescence in solids is the phenomenon in which electronic states of solids are excited by some energy from an external source and the excitation energy is released as light. When the energy comes from short-wavelength light, usually ultraviolet light, the phenomenon is called photoluminescence. In this chapter, photolumines-cence in solids is classified from the point of view of the nature of the electronic transitions producing photoluminescence, and the spectral characteristics of each kind of photoluminescence are described and discussed.
