Part of the book series: Advances in Experimental Medicine and Biology ((AEMB,volume 438))

Abstract

Although dry eye seems to be a common symptom in eye care practice, very little is known of its true prevalence in a large population. One reason for this lack of knowledge is that until the recent industry-sponsored dry eye meeting at the National Eye Institute, there was no standard definition for dry eye and the diagnostic criteria varied from study to study.
