Sensitivity of Protein C Immunosensor with and Without Human Serum Albumin

Part of the book series: Advances in Experimental Medicine and Biology ((AEMB,volume 471))

Abstract

Protein C (PC) acts as an anticoagulant and antithrombotic in the hemostasis pathway. The PC deficiency can result in thrombosis and other clinical complications due to the blockage of oxygen transport. The proposed PC immunosensor is designed to diagnose a PC deficient patient prior to the onset of thrombosis and also to monitor a patient’s PC level in blood plasma. The current work focuses on the effect that non-competitive inhibitors have on the immunosensor’s sensitivity compared to pure PC samples in buffer solution. Human serum albumin (HSA) was chosen as the first testing protein because it represents approximately 55% of the proteins in human blood plasma.
