Abstract
In the examination of the processes through which innovative techniques and ideas are produced and diffused, considerable interest has been raised by the concept of knowledge networks. By knowledge networks we mean the nodes and links that map the interactions of knowledge producers in scientific, technical and academic fields. The nature of these interactions and the strength of the links differ substantially between pure basic research and applied research and development, which in many respects represent the two extremes.
