Abstract
This paper examines the challenges of Japan’s labor market since the post-bubble recession in the early 1990s. These challenges appear to be part of the continual employment adjustments in Japan’s labor market which have been occurring for the last four decades. The fundamental principle guiding the three pillars and its changes are discussed. Although there are some special features in the post-bubble recession, to a large extent, Japanese businesses can still follow the re-structuring methods that have been used in the past economic downturns since the observed changes in the labor market are on-going adjustments of the three pillars to the environment.
