Retroviruses in Rodents

The Retroviridae

Part of the book series: The Viruses ((VIRS))

Abstract

Rodents have long been used as model systems for the analysis of oncogenesis. The early recognition that rodent retroviruses played an etiological role in neoplastic diseases has resulted in the extensive characterization of these viruses and the virus-host interaction. The first evidence for a tumorigenic mammalian retrovirus was, in fact, provided in 1936 by Bittner (1936), who identified an agent responsible for mammary carcinomas in the milk of nursing female C3H mice. Since that time, numerous replication-competent as well as replication-defective viruses have been described, and the mechanisms by which these viruses infect and transform cells have been under intensive study.
