Abstract

There is no doubt that during angiogenesis connective tissue breakdown occurs. Ausprunk, 1979 showed that in the early stages of vascularisation of the cornea after implantation of a tumour transplant, capillary sprouts from limbal venules and capillaries began to grow through the connective tissue towards the implant. On day one after the implant she observed that the basal lamina which separates the microvessel cells from their perivascular connective tissue began to fragment. By the second day she observed that cells extended large pseudopods into the connective tissue and began to migrate towards the implant.
