Arenavirus Replication

Molecular Dissection of the Role of Viral Protein and RNA

  • Chapter
The Arenaviridae

Part of the book series: The Viruses ((VIRS))

Abstract

Arenaviruses have provided model systems in which to study host-virus relationships during persistent infections. Many of the members of this virus group, which includes Lassa virus, Junin virus, lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus (LCMV), and Machupo virus, have been associated with hemorrhagic fevers in humans, but more often than not, they do not appear to be a serious human health hazard. Interest in arenaviruses derives from the ability to persistently infect their natural hosts, and therefore much effort has been directed to an understanding of virus-cell interactions and immune system modulation of arenavirus infection.
