Abstract
The assemblage described here represents the first ichthyofauna from the Last Interglacial of the Eastern Sahara. At Bir Tarfawi, five Middle Paleolithic lake episodes could be distinguished, separated by intervals of hyperaridity. Of these, only Grey Phases 1, 2 and 3 of the East Lake (the second, third and fourth lakes) yielded fish remains. Various absolute dating methods suggest that these three lakes occurred within an interval of <10 kyr at about 135 ka. The Grey Phases have been correlated with some part of Isotope Stage 5 (Wendorf et al. 1991; Chs. 11–18, this volume).
