Abstract
This chapter deals with the recovery, sampling and interpretation of the faunal remains from various Middle Paleolithic sites at Bir Tarfawi excavated in 1986 and 1987. The sites and site divisions that yielded bones, even if only scraps, are listed in Table 8.1, which summarizes the general composition of the various archaeozoological assemblages. Detailed information on the sites can be found elsewhere in this volume. The BT-14 (1986) assemblage combines material from various levels in the main excavation of BT-14, which Dr. F. Wendorf brought to Belgium for a preliminary assessment of the archaeozoological potential of the excavation; material from this assemblage was also used for dating.
