Translational Regulation in Adenovirus-Infected Cells

  • Chapter
Translational Regulation of Gene Expression 2

Abstract

Adenoviruses comprise a large group of DNA viruses that infect humans, a variety of animals, and birds.1 The large number of different adenovirus serotypes display different tissue tropisms.2 Respiratory tract infections are associated with types 1–7 and 14, conjunctival infections with type 8, and enteric infections with types 12, 18, 21, 40, and 41. In addition, types 1, 2, 5, and 6 are associated with latent respiratory tract infections that may persist for months and occasionally years.3 Adenoviruses were originally studied because of their ability to induce a profound cytopathic effect and to alter basic cellular metabolism during infection. The investigation for the past 40 years of the complex cellular metabolic changes that occur during infection by adenovirus has contributed important fundamental information to the understanding of gene regulation in animal cells.
