Abstract

In spite of intensive research, present knowledge of the basic factors responsible for the initiation and progress of prostate cancer is nearly as limited as it was 45 years ago, at a time when Huggins inaugurated contrasexual hormonal therapy [121, 268]. Prostate cancer has become an increasingly common disease among elderly men. It is associated with a high prevalence of latent cancer, but only a small fraction of these dormant cancers will ever grow to become clinically evident [94]. Current research in this area is concentrated on identifying the biological mechanisms that hold the growing process under control, with special reference to the nature and role of growth regulatory factors present in normal, as well as neoplastic, prostate glands. These studies will advance our understanding of the mechanisms involved in the pathogenesis of prostate cancer.
