Abstract

Filarial nematodes constitute a group of pathogens with extraordinary medical and veterinary medical importance. The lymphatic filariae of humans affect almost 90 million people worldwide (Ottesen, 1992). Onchocerciasis is a major cause of infectious blindness, affecting nearly 50 million people in sub-Saharan Africa and the Americas and resulting in blindness in about 1 million people (Taylor, 1985).
