Abstract
The Test of Nonverbal Intelligence (TONI; Brown, Sherbenou, & Johnsen, 1982, 1990, 1997) was built 20 years ago in response to the increasing diversity and complexity of a society in which the evaluation of intellectual ability and aptitude was rapidly becoming a dominant motif. That trend has continued, and even burgeoned to the current day. Elementary and secondary schools, institutions of higher learning, business and industry, clinics, hospitals, and agencies in virtually every sector of our society routinely use measures of aptitude and ability not only in research but also in practical, everyday decision-making.
