Definition of Adjunctive Therapies

Adjunctive therapies are treatments used in conjunction with a primary treatment (e.g., antimicrobial therapy) to increase the possibility of successful clinical outcome of a condition or disease state. In some instances, such as in malaria, adjunctive therapies are introduced to treat the complications of the disease (e.g., endothelial cell activation, microvascular injury and obstruction, and multiorgan dysfunction) rather than the causative agent (e.g., Plasmodium parasites) with the aim of reducing the risk of death and/or disability associated with infection.
