Multiple Sclerosis Immunology

Abstract

For many years, treatment of multiple sclerosis (MS), as the most common, disabling neurological condition in young adults in the developed world has been hampered by a lack of understanding of its initiation and progression. However, accelerating progress in MS research on several fronts has led to numerous clinical trials with a range of drugs and therapeutic principles. The vast majority of these therapeutics targets components of the immune system, as pathological, immunologic, and genetic studies point to the immune system as the primary driver of MS. While some of these drugs failed to show efficacy, others have revealed devastating side effects, and again others have proven to be beneficial. They have all shed more light on the pathogenesis of MS and contributed substantially to the understanding of this heterogeneous disease.
