Abstract
How indeed? This quotation, from a tenth grader named Ryan, asks the questions many students with NVLD ask: “Why is mathematics so hard? How am I going to pass my math classes?” Students with NVLD often find, as Ryan did, that mathematics is a very difficult subject for them.

Appendix A. Programs and Materials for Mathematics Interventions
Teachers, educational therapists, and parents need well-developed materials for mathematics interventions to use with students with NVLD. To date, no program or curriculum has been developed specifically or exclusively for those with NVLD. In the absence of such programs, instructors will want to evaluate each program to find the one most closely aligned with the principles for instruction delineated in Chap. 12 and age appropriate for the student. Every program will need some adaptations for the child or adolescent with NVLD. The following list is not an endorsement of any particular program, but rather a list of possibilities that educators and parents can investigate in their search for appropriate materials:

Grade-level mathematics textbooks. All of the major educational publishers, such as Prentice Hall or Houghton Mifflin, have a series of mathematics textbooks for each grade or topic, such as geometry. These books and the teachers’ editions which accompany them are available in bookstore or online at sites such as Amazon.com. New and used textbooks, workbooks, and teachers’ manuals are available.
