The Relationship Between Functional Results and Radiographs in One-Stage Posteromedial Release

Abstract

Radiographs have been used to evaluate the deformities of congenital clubfeet (CTEV) since Barwell first described their use in CTEV in 1896. Radiographs show the alignment and the deformities of bones in CTEV, whereas numerous angular measurements have been described to evaluate the degree of the various deformities. Simons5 standardized the technique for positioning the patient, the x-ray machine and the cassette, and the technique of measurement of the films. According to these standards, we evaluated our results of Turco’s one-stage posteromedial release of congenital clubfeet. We also examined the relationship between the clinical results and the functional results, and reported that the functional results showed a close relationship to angular measurements.8
