Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to call attention to a type of CTEV that I call the “atypical idiopathic clubfoot,” which occurs in a very small percentage of congenital clubfeet. At birth, it appears to be a typical clubfoot with no associated abnormalities and without any stigmata of neurological or genetic syndromes. The main difference is that it responds altogether differently to both operative and nonoperative treatment. Results with early soft tissue surgery are unpredictable and, unlike the more common typical idiopathic clubfoot, early surgery usually results in a grotesque, overcorrected severe flatfoot.
