Abstract

Electron-beam radiation represents a significant addition to the armamentarium of the clinician wishing to use ionizing radiation for the treatment of skin lesions. With the introduction of the medical linear accelerator, electron-beam radiation has come into routine clinical use. Electrons have many properties that make them well suited for treating the skin, chief among these being a depth of penetration that can be well controlled with little or no exposure to tissue beyond the targeted depth, as occurs in superficial x rays. However, in contrast to superficial photon irradiation, electron radiation is relatively difficult and expensive to produce.
